Our story

From humble beginnings to a new age in knitting, Roopa's history is marked by excellence every step of the way. Learn more about our story.

1972

Roopa’s story began in 1972 when our founder, Nat Thakkar, immigrated from India to Montreal, Canada with little more than a dream and less than $100 in his pocket. Starting as a factory worker in a woven fabrics company, Nat swiftly transitioned to a knitting mill in 1973, immersing himself in learning the craft.

Over the next 18 years, Nat mastered the operation of circular knitting machines and grew from a newcomer with no textile knowledge to a production manager of a vertical knit manufacturer, overseeing all knitting, dyeing, and finishing operations.

1991

In 1991, Nat embarked on establishing his own knitting mill, beginning as a “converter” of knit fabrics. From procuring yarn to overseeing the knitting, dyeing, and finishing, he meticulously managed every stage of production with a keen eye for quality, delivering final products that instantly garnered clients’ trust and loyalty. With the help of Nat’s son, Amit, the business grew steadily, culminating in the establishment of a fully-equipped knitting mill in the Toronto suburbs by 2001.

This period of growth brought challenges due to international competition shrinking the Canadian knitting industry. However, Roopa's adaptability and commitment to quality allowed it not just to survive but flourish.

2001

2001 marked a new era, with Amit formally joining the business. During this time, Roopa evolved from a provider of basic knits to a manufacturer of innovative, eco-friendly fabrics, textured knits, and the finest Canadian fleece.

Today, Roopa stands proudly as a leader in the knitting industry, renowned for its commitment to quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction. We not only preserve the time-honoured techniques of the craft but also embrace cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices, positioning ourselves as a trusted partner for brands globally.
